What Do You Mean By Sentence…?How Many Kinds of Sentence…?
When we want to express our thoughts we use a group
of words. We know that a group of words that 'makes a complete sense is called
a sentence. But based on the meaning they convey we can divide sentences
into five kinds:
1. Assertive or Declarative sentence.
2. Interrogative sentence
3. Imperative sentence
4. Optative sentence
5. Exclamatory sentence
1. Assertive or Declarative Sentence: sentences which makes a statement or assert or declare something is called an assertive or declarative sentence.Assertive sentences may be positive, negative or emphatic.
Read the following sentences:
(a) The sun rises in the east.
(b) The boys made a small hut.
(c) You were late yesterday.
(d) You have done your question.
(e) She can speak Hindi and English.
2. Interrogative Sentence: A sentence that asks a question is called an Interrogative sentence or a question. All interrogative sentences end with a sign of Interrogation (?)
Read the following sentences:
(a) Why are you going there?
(b) Have you done your homework?
(d) Is this your car?
3. Imperative
Sentence:The sentence that
expresses a command, order, request, advice
or suggestion is called
an Imperative sentence:
Read the following sentences:
(a) Bring me a glass of water.
(Positive Command)
(b) Do not make a noise. (Negative Command)
(c) Please do not make a noise. (Negative Request)
(d) Please give me a glass of water. (Positive Request)
(e) Respect your elders. (Advice)
4. Optative
Sentence: The sentences which express wish or prayer are called Optative sentences.
Read the following sentences:
(a) May God bless you!
(b) Would that I were a king!
Imp: Optative sentences always end up with
an exclamation sign (!)
5. Exclamatory
Sentence:A Sentence that expresses
some strong or sudden
feelings is called an exclamatory
sentence. All exclamatory
sentences or exclamatory words
end up with a sign
of exclamation (!).
Read the following sentences:
(a) How beautiful the scenery is !
(b) What a fine piece of work !
(c) Alas! She is no more.
(d) Hurrah! We have
won the match.).
