Q1. How does the author define ‘liberty’? 

Ans. ‘Liberty’ is the freedom to think what we like, say what we like, work at what we like and go where we like. 

Q2. What is Discipline? 

Ans. Discipline is restraint on liberty. It trains people to obey rules and order and punishes them if they don’t do. It is only discipline that enables men to live in a society and yet retain individual liberty. 

Q3. Why should one keep to the left? 

Ans. Keeping to the left while going on a road is the rule of the road. We should obey this rule of the road not only for our own advantage, but also for the rights of others. 

Q4. How does pure discipline differ from enforced discipline? 

Ans. The discipline that comes from our inside is pure discipline. And the discipline that is enforced on us from outside is enforced discipline. 

Q5. What type of liberty do the British believe in?   

Ans. The British believe in four type of liberty, they want the liberty to think, to say, to work at what they like to go where they like.    

Q6. Why does one have a natural inclination to avoid discipline? 

Ans. Discipline trains people to obey rules and order and punishes them if they don’t do so. It is a restraint on liberty. So it is quite natural that man has an inclination to avoid this restraint. 

Q7. Why is discipline unavoidable for a modern man? 

Ans. Modern man lives in a complex communities in which every person is dependent on others. So discipline is unavoidable for a modern man. 

Q8. How did the author acknowledge the salute of a private soldier? 

Ans. The author was a brand new second lieutenant at that time. Once he was walking on to parade. A private soldier passed him and saluted him. The author acknowledged the salute of that soldier with an airy wave of his hand.

Ans. The colonel rebuked the author for not returning a salute properly. He punished the author for this. He made the author march in front of the whole battalion and practise before the Sergeant Major’s cane how to return a salute. ‘Discipline begins with the officers,’’. He said to author.

Ans. The Colonel told the author that discipline begins with the officers.

Ans. The leader can build up the leadership of his team; he must first realize his own responsibility. He must display high standards in his own life. Only them he can succeed in building up the leadership of his team.

Ans. According to the author, taking men into one’s confidence was not a new technique invented in the last war. He says that leaders have always followed this technique to lead the people by winning their confidence. This art is a must in a successful leader. It helps in building a good rapport between the leader and his followers. 

Q13. How can you say that discipline is not derogatory? 

Ans. It is only discipline that enables people to live in a community and yet retain individual liberty. It does put some check on our freedom, but it does not cut down our individual freedom. It makes man truly free. 

Q14. What type of discipline is deliberately designed to submerge the individual? 

Ans. Totalitarian discipline with its slogan-shouting masses is deliberately designed to submerge the individual. Totalitarian discipline means a system of government in which there is only one political party that has complete power and control over the people. 

Q15. How does the author commend the role of British railway signalmen in ast war? 

Ans. The author says that in the blitz of the last war, not even a single British Railway signalman left his post. They stood in the heart of the target area. They didn’t leave their place. They put their job before themselves. They knew the importance of their work for their country. 

Q16. How can a nation overcome an economic or military crisis? 

Ans. A nation can overcome an economic or military crisis with the help of discipline only. Any nation without discipline surely goes to the dogs. And no work or progress is possible without a discipline living. Rather there is bound to be confusion, disorder and chaos. 

Q17. What according to author, is meant by democracy? 

Ans. According to the author, democracy means that responsibility is decentralized. And no one can avoid doing something he should do. He says that a nation can overcome an economic or military crisis with the help of discipline only.
