Gerund

Finite Verb’s

A verb that changes its form according to person, tense, mood is called a finite verb.

Example;-

1. Neeru runs fast

They run fast

2. She is running fast

We have run fast.

Non-finite verb’s

A verb or sentences do not change according to tense, number and person. Such verbs are called non-finites verbs.

Example:-

1. Rashmi eats to live

    You eat to live

 

 Gerund

A Gerund is that form of the verb which ends in v’-ing and has the force of a noun. That is why a gerund is called a verb noun.

Example:-

·        Running is good for health

·        She likes painting

·        He is addicted to drinking

 

The Participle

A participle is that form of verb which partakes of the nature both of a verb and of an adjective

Present Participle

V1+ ing

Go + ing

Eat + ing

Example:-

I will buy a talking clock

This house has no running water

I found the conditions soothing

She went away smiling

The player left the ground abusing

 

 

 

Past Participle


V3 + gone

Example:-

The injured man was carried to the hospital.(Adjective)

I found the door shut.(Complement)

He left the gym totally exhausted.(Adverb)

I saw a dog crushed under a truck.

 

Perfect Participle

Having + V3

Being + v3

Having been + v3

Example:-

  • ·        He had resolved on a certain course
  • ·        He acted with vigour

Having resolved on a course, he acted with vigour.

  • ·        They had no fodder
  • ·        They could give the cow nothing to eat

Having no fodder, they could give the cow.

  • ·        The stable door was open
  • ·        The house was stolen

The stable door having been opened, The house was stolen.
